The Federal Transit Administration started in 1964 as the Urban Mass Transportation Administration within the U.S. Department of Transportation. The Administration became the Federal Transit Administration in 1991.

Through the Federal Transit Administration, the federal governement administers programs of financial assistance to the states for mass transportation.

The Administration's Region 3 Office serves Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
