On June 12, 2012, Ms. Alston was convicted in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court of theft of General Assembly funds and misconduct in office. Sentencing was postponed until after a separate trial scheduled for October 2012. By a pretrial plea agreement, Ms. Alston agreed to tender an Alford Plea to a charge of fraudulent misappropriation by a fiduciary. On October 9, 2012, Ms. Alston was sentenced in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court to one year in jail (suspended), and ordered to pay $800 in restitution to the General Assembly, and complete 300 hours of community service. In accordance with the terms of the plea agreement, when she completed the terms of her sentence, Ms. Alston was granted probation before judgment on November 13, 2012, and the earlier conviction was stricken from the record.
On May 2, 2013, Ms. Alston was disbarred by the Court of Appeals from practicing as an attorney.
