For millenia, Maryland has had a diverse population of residents. Even before Western European explorers landed upon the continent, the land that became Maryland boasted a bourgeoning society. Since 3000 B.C., Maryland sustained many native bands, tribes, and confederacies.

On January 9, 2012, Tribes of the Piscataway became the first to be recognized by Maryland (Executive Order 01.01.2012.01; Executive Order 01.01.2012.02). Currently, there are no federally recognized tribes living in Maryland.
